The piston–cylinder apparatus is widely used to investigate rock properties at the conditions of the interior of the Earth, but uncertainty in its calibration of pressure persists, with substantial differences between laboratories. We use a ceramic of magnesium and zinc oxides to measure the conditions experienced by a sample. Routine use of such ceramics provides an archive of experimental conditions, enables interlaboratory comparisons, and resolves long-standing controversies in calibration.

Models for the generation of silicic magmas are divided into two groups: intra-crustal melting and basaltic origin. Peraluminous felsic leucogranites are considered as the only granite examples showing no mantle input. This interpretation is re-evaluated, and we show that leucogranites, as most other crustal granite types, can have a mantle filiation. This stresses the critical importance of the mantle for granite generation and opens the way for unification of silicic magma generation models.

This study presents a new method designed to analyze micrometer-scale chemical and isotopic profiles in minerals, glasses, and other solids. The employed technique combines plasma mass spectrometers and a state-of-the-art femtosecond laser equipped with open-source software (LinuxCNC) that controls the movement of the laser beam. It allows for equably drilling into the sample surface, e.g., in order to measure chemically or isotopically zoned or heterogeneous materials at micrometer scales.

The past 40 years have been a golden age for eclogite studies, supported by an ever wider range of instrumentation and enhanced computational capabilities, linked with ongoing developments in the determination of the temperatures and pressures of metamorphism and the age of these rocks. These data have been used to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution of metamorphism and secular change but not without controversy in relation to the emergence of plate tectonics on Earth.

We determined the physical conditions at the time of its entrapment for an inclusion pair hosted in a Siberian diamond (Udachnaya kimberlite) and found that it equilibrated under relatively oxidized conditions, near the enstatite–magnesite–olivine–diamond (EMOD) buffer, similarly to Udachnaya xenoliths originating from comparable depths. These results can be reconciled with models suggesting relatively oxidized, water-rich CHO fluids as the most likely parents for lithospheric diamonds.

Amphibole–liquid partitioning of elements of geological relevance is experimentally derived at conditions compatible with those of the Earth's upper mantle. Experiments are carried out at different oxygen fugacity conditions and variable Cl content in order to investigate their influence on the amphibole–liquid partition coefficients. Our results point to the capability of amphibole to act as filter for trace elements at upper-mantle conditions, oxidized conditions, and Cl-rich environments.

On the west coast of the German North Sea island of Sylt, an electrum–quartz pebble weighing 10.4 g was discovered in a cliff of Saalian glaciogenic sediments. This is an unusually large and rare precious metal to find. Within our paper we document and characterize this discovery. An attempt to investigate its provenance points towards a southern Norwegian origin. This leads to the conclusion that ice advance events were involved in transporting this pebble from Norway to Germany.

Hydrous defects in quartz contain important information regarding the origin and history of individual grains. This article summarises the findings from experimental work and analysis of natural material over the past 60 years, and results are interpreted with respect to igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary processes.
